HSE Grant for Hair Loss

Chemotherapy Treatment

This grant of €770 is available to all applicants following a cancer related treatment regardless of eligibility status. This means a medical card is not required for this grant, which is €770 annually.

A prescription letter for the hospital or from your GP confirming that you are receiving treatment will be required to receive the HSE Grant. We will take care of all the paperwork on your behalf

Alopecia Hair Loss

A specialist or doctor’s letters is required, stating your type of hair loss together with your medical card details. We will process all the relevant paperwork. This letter can be given to us at your appointment. Or if you need to send it in to us you, your doctor, liaison nurse can send it to us

PRSI Hair Replacement Benefit

The PRSI Hair Replacement Benefit Scheme is available to insured workers, the self employed and retired people who have the required number of PRSI contributions. The department covers a maximum of €500 towards the cost of a non-surgical replacement product, where hair loss results from a disease or a treatment of a disease such as cancer or alopecia. Once per calendar year.

Once approved, you can claim up to €500 for your wig or headwear per calendar year. We are a registered hair replacement provider with the Department of Social & Protection.

Types of Alopecia which qualify are:

  • Chemotherapy- induced alopecia (anangen effluvium)
  • Alopecia areata (which includes alopecia totalis / universalis, diffuse alopecia areata, alopecia ophiasis)
  • Primary scarring alopecia (cicatricial alopecias )
  • Frontal fibrosing alopecia and lichen planopilaris (scarring alopecia)
  • Alopecia resulting from surgery or trauma, including burns

We can check if you qualify for the PRSI Wig Grant eligibility and then claim payment afterwards. All we require is your PPS number, date of birth and your permission signature. Please download the two forms below and have them both filled out and bring them with you when you attend you appointment at Wigworld.

Before treatment, you will need to sign a consent form allowing us to have your identification details and for this information to be passed on to the government department so that your fees can be paid.

Claiming as a Dependant

If you are claiming as a dependent under the social insurance (PRSI) record of your spouse/civil partner or cohabitant, both you and your spouse or partner will need to complete a dependant spouse application form and send it to the Treatment Benefits section for approval.

Private Health Insurance

We also work with clients who have private health insurance. The amount you are covered for depends on your policy and plan. We recommednd you ring your private health provider for more details. We can provide you with the relevant documentation in order for you claim a reimbursement.

How It Works

Following you consultation and when you collect your wig you pay us directly for the item you have purchased. We give you a receipt confirming your purchases. You will  need to submit this along with your doctors letter for your insurer to process your claim.
